History of the Red Kettle

In 1891, Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee was distraught because so many poor individuals in San Francisco were going hungry. During the holiday season, he resolved to provide a free Christmas dinner for the destitute and poverty-stricken. He only had one major hurdle to overcome — funding the project.

Where would the money come from, he wondered. He lay awake nights, worrying, thinking, praying about how he could find the funds to fulfill his commitment of feeding 1,000 of the city’s poorest individuals on Christmas Day. As he pondered the issue, his thoughts drifted back to his sailor days in Liverpool, England. He remembered how at Stage Landing, where the boats came in, there was a large, iron kettle called “Simpson’s Pot” into which passers-by tossed a coin or two to help the poor.

The next day Captain McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing at the foot of Market Street. Beside the pot, he placed a sign that read, “Keep the Pot Boiling.” He soon had the money to see that the needy people were properly fed at Christmas.

What Happens When You Ring

Each year, The Salvation Army will serve more than 25 million people across America – including many here in your community. That means 55+ million meals for the hungry, 10+ million nights of shelter for the homeless, and countless Christmas gifts for children who may otherwise go without.

So truly, you can make a difference with every ring. The funds you raise as a Salvation Army bell ringer will make a year-round impact in your community through social services assistance, homeless shelters, disaster relief, children’s programs, rehabilitation services, anti-human trafficking, and more.

Donations in the red kettle stay local – directly impacting the lives of your neighbors by helping them in their time of need. When you ring the bell, you’re making change happen.

General Questions

What is Register to Ring?

Register to Ring is a website for volunteers to sign up to ring bells for The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettle Campaign.

How does bell ringing work?

Simply sign up for a date, time, and location that’s convenient for you. A kettle and bell will be at your location when you arrive. If there is already a ringer there, just let them know you are the next scheduled volunteer and take over for them. Then, start ringing with a smile. Wish shoppers a “Merry Christmas” and thank people for their donation.

Where does the money given to my kettle go?

When you volunteer to ring bells, you help improve and even save lives. The money dropped in a red kettle goes right back into your local community. By volunteering even just two hours of your time, you can raise enough money to feed a family of four for an entire week.

Is there an age requirement for bell ringers?

While anyone is invited to join us as a bell ringer, children under a certain age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Check with your local Salvation Army for more details. Families report bell ringing is a great way to instill a sense of community spirit in young children. You may be starting a new tradition for the family to share for years to come!

How long do I have to ring?

In most areas, volunteers can sign up for a minimum shift of two hours. But if you want to ring more, please feel free to do so! We encourage you to find someone to ring with you (then, the time will really fly). Please just be sure you’re able to fulfill whatever length of time at the kettle you reserve.

What if I need to reschedule?

If you are unable to make your scheduled ringing time, please call your local Salvation Army office at least 48 hours before your shift. If your shift is fewer than 48 hours away, please call the contact number listed on your confirmation email.

Does bell ringing count as community service?

If you would like to schedule community service hours, you can notify The Salvation Army of your intentions when signing up to ring by checking the Community Service checkbox. If you would like to schedule court-ordered community service hours, please check directly with your local Salvation Army to see if this option is available in your community.
